Blue Opalescent

As with other opalescent colors, bone ash has been added to the molten glass and the piece reheated when removed from the mold, turning certain parts of the glass milky. As you can see from these two examples, the opalescence is on the edges, leaving the center the original color. The Westmoreland Pillow and Sunburst bowl on the left (showing the back) is a medium blue. The compote is Westmoreland's File and Fan and is a lighter blue. Westmoreland made the majority of the blue opal carnival, Fenton a few pieces, and Northwood was limited mostly to Hearts and Flowers compotes.
