Western Thistle, Riihimaki (Finland)   Updated 2/5/2009

The pattern is noted for the large thistle in intaglio and diamonds around the base. The above blue water set is a good example of the international aspect of carnival: it was made in Finland and found its way to Argentina from where it was sent to the US. The pieces auctioned individually in 1996. Other than the water set pieces, the vase is the only other shape found with any regularity. Glen and Stephen Thistlewood, in their book A Century of Carnival Glass, report bowls and compotes.
