Garden Path and Variant, Dugan | |
There are two versions of this pattern, one called Garden Path and the other Garden Path variant. The variant is the most common and shown here. The only difference is the addition of the plume shapes and winged hearts around the outer part of the design in the variant. Most have the soda gold pattern on the exterior, seen through the piece above. A large ice cream bowl in purple, it brought $1,300 in 1996.
Actually, I have never seen what would be described as a Garden Path--the non variant, and I don't know anyone who has seen one. There is the theory that the piece Mrs. Hartung saw, and named, was an early proof that never went into production. Barb Chamberlain has another theory. She suggests that the piece Mrs. Hartung saw and named Garden Path was actually the small plate. Mrs. Hartung does not mention the size of the plate in her Book III description. Read Barb's article in the September 2019 issue of The Pump. Auctioneers often list the pieces as just Garden Path though, when in fact they are the variant.
Note: In 2003, a small ruffled bowl that the seller described as ice blue sold on ebay for $1,201.
