Grape and Cable Bowls and Plates, Northwood    Updated 12/6/2011

Northwood produced a tremendous amount of carnival and a large portion was Grape and Cable. According to my database of auction sales, almost 6 percent was their Grape and Cable pattern. Because they produced so much, they had several molds for their bowls and plates (among other shapes). Many were virtually identical, intended to replace worn molds or simply to allow faster production. There are some molds that have more pronounced differences, (aside from the size). One is much like the regular (above left) but has a leaf in the center.

Another, called the variant (above right), is most easily distinguished by the tendrils that sneak into the otherwise plain center. Notice also that the shape of the grape bunches is quite different. This variant is also the front pattern of the lettered piece, Old Rose Distillery. While most bowls are found with a collar base, a few have the Meander exterior that has three spatula feet. Otherwise, they'll usually have the basketweave exterior. Doesn't seem to affect the price much one way or the other, however.

What does affect the price are patterns that have a stippled background. Such pieces are always worth more than the unstippled examples.
